Terrible Ideas & TBRs

Back in January, I had the bright idea to do two blog posts and skip February. But, as it turned out, this was a terrible idea. I hadn't considered how many books I'd end up reading in the interim. So rather than making you suffer through a long intro, I'll get straight to the books.🀣

What I've been reading . . .

The Stolen Heir by Holly Black

The Stolen Heir duology, Bk. 1

YA Fantasy

"I feel a little pummeled by Oak's beauty."

For those of you who loved The Folk of the Air series, this is set in the same world. I had absolutely no idea it was coming out, so it was a pleasant surprise! There weren't any appearances by Cardan and Jude. Yet. But I have a feeling there will be as there were a number of mentions of our dearly beloved couple!πŸ‘‘πŸ—‘

Small side note: The pacing of this book feels a bit slower than the previous series. It was still thoroughly enjoyable. Keep in mind that this is a different story with different characters, and you should be fine.

The Ballad of Never After by Stephanie Garber

Once Upon a Broken Heart, Bk. 2

YA Fantasy

". . . she believed that everyone's life was like a story with an ending that was not yet written, and therefore everyone's future held infinite possibilities."

Vampires and Jacks! Need I say more? Also, you are not prepared for the ending. I was warned. Still wasn't ready.πŸ˜’πŸ’”

Defy the Night and Defend the Dawn by Brigid Kemmerer

Defy the Night, Books 1 & 2

YA Fantasy

"Mind your mettle, Tessa."

This series was recommended to me by an Instagram friend. When I told her I'd add it to my TBR, she DM'd me and said, "Move it to the top!" I agree 100%. Don't just add it to your TBR. Make it your next read!

The Complete Chi's Sweet Home, Part 2 by Kanata Konami

Children's Graphic Novel

I read this to get a library Winter Reading prize. I usually read a book of poetry or a graphic novel to squeeze in one last book (always a struggle). I brought home a pretty mint green mug and enjoyed a lovely cup of cocoa afterwards.

Be Healed by Bob Schuchts

Nonfiction

If you haven't heard of Dr. Bob, he and his friend, Jake Khym, are Catholic therapists with a podcast called Restore the Glory. As their website says, they believe in "an integrated approach to the healing journey." If you're like me and it takes you a while to get through nonfiction, I would suggest their "Anatomy of a Wound" series. It covers much of the material in Bob's book.

The Little Book of Scandi Living by Bronte Aurell

Nonfiction

This book was informative and fun!

What I've been listening to . . .

"Diamonds" || Rihanna

"Hope" || NF

Watch the video. It's amazing!

"Will You Fight" || Klergy feat. Beginners

I heard this on a rerun of MacGyver (2016-2021) the other day and just had to look it up.

It went on a writing playlist pretty quickly.

Blessings,

J

Spring is Here!🌷

Happy spring, friends!🌞🌱 We've had a lot of rain here in the Hoosier state. It's getting warmer, and things are greening up. I can't wait for sunny days when I can go for walks and start working on my garden. This year, I'm planning to try my hand at container gardening. My garden plot is pretty small to start with. I like things that are straightforward and practical. So, this seems like it might be a good fit. And less weeding! Which is good, because I'm continuing to work through final tweaks for Champion's Sword . I should be done by the end of April. Then I'll move on to formatting, followed by one final read to check for commas and such. I'm looking forward to refilling my creative well and returning to drafting after so long in editing land.πŸ˜‰ Reading . . . This month, I re-read Spells for Forgetting  by Adrienne Young. And I finally got my hands on Ignite  by Kara Swanson. If you've read Champion's Key , you'll understand why this ...

Happy December!

Happy December, friends! I don't know about you, but I drink hot drinks all year round. I love to start my day with coffee and end it with tea. As the weather has turned colder, I've found greater enjoyment in it. There's just something about cozying up with a warm drink. But to be honest, as I've gotten older, a fair amount of the shiny parts of the Christmas season have been overshadowed by the frustration of societal expectations. Less is more, I say. Yet I've realized this isn't about me. Shocker, I know. So, I've set out my few minimalist decorations. I've embraced a tree this year (a tiny Scandinavian-style one, but even so). And strangely, I'm finding that I don't mind the twinkle lights so much this year. Even if the silver garland I placed on the mantle is driving me bonkers. Reading . . . Behemoth

Guys, I have three chapters left! Theoretically, I should be able to tackle these last chapters next week. I will say, though, that I've learned things often take me longer than I expect, and chapter fifty-one is a behemoth . Seriously, it's double the size of a lot of my chapters. After I've finished with edits, I'll read through the entire book to check everything one final time (and fix em dashes in the first half😐) before moving on to formatting, cover design, and publication. Yay! Reading . . . This month, I read So That Happened  by Katie Bailey (Donovan Family, Bk. 1), a grumpy-sunshine romcom that was super cute. And I finally returned to the Hawthorne Brothers series (Jenny Proctor) and read How to Kiss Your Grumpy Boss  (Bk. 2) and How to Kiss Your Enemy (Bk. 3). Somehow, I unintentionally picked three workplace romances . . . and movie star ones for my upcoming blogπŸ™ˆ, with the exception of Beg, Borrow, or Steal by the amazing Sarah Adams. I'll be repe...
