Not My Monkeys

"Not my circus, not my monkeys."

--Polish proverb

I like this quote because it reminds me that not everything is my responsibility. I might want to worry about something or try and fix it, but that doesn't mean I should. Is it my circus? Am I the ringmaster? Am I in the act or watching from the stands? My level of involvement should determine my actions. I don't know about you, but if I'm in the audience enjoying my cotton candy, I'm not going to offer to put my head in the lion's mouth.

What I've been reading . . .

Jump by Steve Harvey

Nonfiction

Audiobook

Re-read

Based off a viral video of Steve talking to the audience of Family Feud about the importance of opening your gift (you can Google it!), it's an inspiration/motivational book that's short and easy to read. Definite recommend.

Amish Werewolves of Space by Kerry Nietz

(Peril in Plain Space #3)

Science Fiction

"He also said not to let others define you. Let God do that."

I've said it before but it's worth repeating. Kerry does an amazing job of blending these two genres (SF & Amish). I've enjoyed every book in this series.

Fable by Adrienne Young

YA Fantasy

Fable duology, Book 1

"But if we were going to do this, I would have to be his safe harbor and he would have to be mine."

Fable is a dredger (she mines gems from the ocean) living on the island of thieves her father abandoned her on. She longs to make it off the island and join her father as part of his crew. Enter the brooding West, her unhappy-to-have-her-onboard ticket out of the Narrows.

Between the thief island and the trading company rivalries, there are heavy pirate vibes in this book! Ships, danger, treasure. Annnd . . . romance.๐Ÿ’™Friends, I cannot wait for book two! Namesake releases on March 16, 2021.

Bonus: If you're a writer whose looking for a community of fellow writers, Adrienne is starting the #findmywritingcommunity on her Instagram on Wednesday, October 14. She'll be doing a live with @kristindwyer on her IG the night before.

Sky in the Deep by Adrienne Young

YA Fantasy

Audiobook

Re-read

I know, I've read Sky four times. So why am I listening to the audiobook? It has Vikings and battles. It's beautiful and heartbreaking. The real question is why wouldn't I?

Cry of the Raven by Morgan L. Busse

(The Ravenwood Saga #3)

Fantasy

"Both courage and fear can spread like a wildfire."

I like happy endings and this book didn't disappoint. Selene and Damien's romance is sweet, and they fight for the love they've gained through unusual circumstances. The final book wraps the story up in a nice bow and gives you hope certain characters will eventually turn to the Light.

Music I have on repeat . . .

"Til the Light Goes Out" by Lindsey Stirling

"Moments Passed" by Dermot Kennedy

Blessings,

J ๐Ÿ’™

Spring is Here!๐ŸŒท

Happy spring, friends!๐ŸŒž๐ŸŒฑ We've had a lot of rain here in the Hoosier state. It's getting warmer, and things are greening up. I can't wait for sunny days when I can go for walks and start working on my garden. This year, I'm planning to try my hand at container gardening. My garden plot is pretty small to start with. I like things that are straightforward and practical. So, this seems like it might be a good fit. And less weeding! Which is good, because I'm continuing to work through final tweaks for Champion's Sword . I should be done by the end of April. Then I'll move on to formatting, followed by one final read to check for commas and such. I'm looking forward to refilling my creative well and returning to drafting after so long in editing land.๐Ÿ˜‰ Reading . . . This month, I re-read Spells for Forgetting  by Adrienne Young. And I finally got my hands on Ignite  by Kara Swanson. If you've read Champion's Key , you'll understand why this ...

Happy December!

Happy December, friends! I don't know about you, but I drink hot drinks all year round. I love to start my day with coffee and end it with tea. As the weather has turned colder, I've found greater enjoyment in it. There's just something about cozying up with a warm drink. But to be honest, as I've gotten older, a fair amount of the shiny parts of the Christmas season have been overshadowed by the frustration of societal expectations. Less is more, I say. Yet I've realized this isn't about me. Shocker, I know. So, I've set out my few minimalist decorations. I've embraced a tree this year (a tiny Scandinavian-style one, but even so). And strangely, I'm finding that I don't mind the twinkle lights so much this year. Even if the silver garland I placed on the mantle is driving me bonkers. Reading . . . Behemoth

Guys, I have three chapters left! Theoretically, I should be able to tackle these last chapters next week. I will say, though, that I've learned things often take me longer than I expect, and chapter fifty-one is a behemoth . Seriously, it's double the size of a lot of my chapters. After I've finished with edits, I'll read through the entire book to check everything one final time (and fix em dashes in the first half๐Ÿ˜) before moving on to formatting, cover design, and publication. Yay! Reading . . . This month, I read So That Happened  by Katie Bailey (Donovan Family, Bk. 1), a grumpy-sunshine romcom that was super cute. And I finally returned to the Hawthorne Brothers series (Jenny Proctor) and read How to Kiss Your Grumpy Boss  (Bk. 2) and How to Kiss Your Enemy (Bk. 3). Somehow, I unintentionally picked three workplace romances . . . and movie star ones for my upcoming blog๐Ÿ™ˆ, with the exception of Beg, Borrow, or Steal by the amazing Sarah Adams. I'll be repe...
