Am I Becoming a Romance Reader?

Last week, I reached my highest weekly word count since January! I am quickly approaching the midpoint of this draft. While my goal is 95,000 words, I'm starting to give myself permission to have a lower total word count. I tend to overwrite then cut my draft down quite a bit. This time, however, I'm being much more methodical. So, I'm hoping it all works itself out in the end.

This book is also different in that my chapters are way shorter. And I'm writing from four POVs with a fifth popping in. One of these characters is my villain, the Shadow Master. I never thought I'd be writing from a villain's perspective, but here we are. Fenix has a flare for the dramatic, so I shouldn't be surprised that he's been demanding attention.πŸ˜†I'm finding it oddly enjoyable.

Reading . . .

Tales From a Haunted Pineapple by Stephen Hillenburg

SpongeBob Comics, Bk. 3

Children's Graphic Novel

I always have trouble getting in that last book for our library's Winter Reading program. I end up grabbing a graphic novel or book of poetry so I can get that prize! Also, I just like SpongeBob.πŸ˜‰

The Fatherless Daughter Project: Understanding Our Losses and Reclaiming Our Lives by Denna Babul & Karin Smithson

Nonfiction

Audiobook

I'm not a big fan of audiobooks, but they're the fastest way for me to get through nonfiction books, which are decidedly less interesting than fiction. This one was definitely well narrated.

The Hundred Loves of Juliet by Evelyn Skye

Fantasy/Magical Realism

A unique twist on Romeo & Juliet that I thoroughly enjoyed!

The Cheat Sheet by Sarah Adams

Romance

I'm not sure at this point if I'm in desperate need of cozy books or if Sarah is making me something I never thought I'd be, a lover of romance novels. Honestly, I think it's a bit of both.πŸ˜‚Romance novels often come off as flat for me. I like there to be a fantasy element as you all know. You also run the risk of spice with them. That's not to say that Sarah's books don't have spice. They do. But Practice Makes Perfect and The Cheat Sheet both sort of walk a fine line between spice and closed door.

I have another book of hers coming. I'll be sure to share my thoughts on this one.

"I'm Only Getting Started" || Avi Kaplan

Enjoying . . .

Scalloped potatoes. A YouTuber I was following for a while shared her favorite cookbook, Mennonite Country-Style Recipes by Esther H. Shank. I already have a recipe for cheesy potatoes that's really yummy, but I don't like that it uses condensed cheese soup. For this recipe, you make your own sauce, and it's really simple. Her tuna patties are easy to make as well and super delicious.

Blessings,

J

Spring is Here!🌷

Happy spring, friends!🌞🌱 We've had a lot of rain here in the Hoosier state. It's getting warmer, and things are greening up. I can't wait for sunny days when I can go for walks and start working on my garden. This year, I'm planning to try my hand at container gardening. My garden plot is pretty small to start with. I like things that are straightforward and practical. So, this seems like it might be a good fit. And less weeding! Which is good, because I'm continuing to work through final tweaks for Champion's Sword . I should be done by the end of April. Then I'll move on to formatting, followed by one final read to check for commas and such. I'm looking forward to refilling my creative well and returning to drafting after so long in editing land.πŸ˜‰ Reading . . . This month, I re-read Spells for Forgetting  by Adrienne Young. And I finally got my hands on Ignite  by Kara Swanson. If you've read Champion's Key , you'll understand why this ...

Happy December!

Happy December, friends! I don't know about you, but I drink hot drinks all year round. I love to start my day with coffee and end it with tea. As the weather has turned colder, I've found greater enjoyment in it. There's just something about cozying up with a warm drink. But to be honest, as I've gotten older, a fair amount of the shiny parts of the Christmas season have been overshadowed by the frustration of societal expectations. Less is more, I say. Yet I've realized this isn't about me. Shocker, I know. So, I've set out my few minimalist decorations. I've embraced a tree this year (a tiny Scandinavian-style one, but even so). And strangely, I'm finding that I don't mind the twinkle lights so much this year. Even if the silver garland I placed on the mantle is driving me bonkers. Reading . . . Behemoth

Guys, I have three chapters left! Theoretically, I should be able to tackle these last chapters next week. I will say, though, that I've learned things often take me longer than I expect, and chapter fifty-one is a behemoth . Seriously, it's double the size of a lot of my chapters. After I've finished with edits, I'll read through the entire book to check everything one final time (and fix em dashes in the first half😐) before moving on to formatting, cover design, and publication. Yay! Reading . . . This month, I read So That Happened  by Katie Bailey (Donovan Family, Bk. 1), a grumpy-sunshine romcom that was super cute. And I finally returned to the Hawthorne Brothers series (Jenny Proctor) and read How to Kiss Your Grumpy Boss  (Bk. 2) and How to Kiss Your Enemy (Bk. 3). Somehow, I unintentionally picked three workplace romances . . . and movie star ones for my upcoming blogπŸ™ˆ, with the exception of Beg, Borrow, or Steal by the amazing Sarah Adams. I'll be repe...
